OUR HERITAGE
Westville Boys’ High School traces its roots back to the mid-1800s when German immigrants taught children in a small and simple structure in Durban, KZN. In 1935, a private farm school for small children opened its doors and gradually grew into an established primary school over the next 20 years. The school’s high school education started in 1955 with the formation of the first Grade 9 class. The high school classes were separated from the younger grades in 1961.
Westville Girls’ High School was constructed in 1964, splitting boys and girls into separate schools. Since then, Westville Boys’ High School has undergone several improvements and developments, expanding the facilities and providing more space for boys to learn. In 1991, the school was awarded Model B status, which finally allowed WBHS to admit pupils of all races. The following year, parents voted to change the school to Model C, giving stakeholders the ability to get more involved in the school’s development. Since taking on Model C status, WBHS has dramatically expanded its amenities, building a wide range of on-site facilities for sports, the arts, and various multi-use spaces.
Over the years, WBHS has emerged as one of the leading academic institutions in South Africa, with many of its students ranking top in the province and the country. WBHS’s balanced approach to education is evident in the range of achievements from its alumni. The school’s old boys have excelled in a wide range of fields, from sports and the arts to academics and music.
